HU OSA 300-40 Hungarian Unit, 1949-1995

The records of the Hungarian Unit give a broad picture of the postwar Hungarian political life, economics, culture and arts, religions, media, social and military issues. The files on the 1956 Revolution are of outstanding interest: in the Hungarian and English language Subject Files there are useful cross-references documenting this crucial event of the contemporary Hungarian history.

HU OSA 300-40-1 Subject Files, 1949-1995

The materials include press clippings, news agency releases, RFE/RL research papers and background analyzes, transcripts of radio broadcasts, samizdat and émigré publications, and information items. There is an extremely rich coverage of the 1956 Revolution as well: one can find the transcripts of RFE programs during the events, as well as documents on the debates of the Petofi Circle, political trials, victims and martyrs of 1956, commemorations, and Hungarian and Western reactions to the Revolution.

HU OSA 300-40-2 Subject Files in English, 1951-1995

As part of the cross-reporting duties of the Hungarian Unit, these files were created mainly for the purpose of keeping the researchers, editors from other units of RFE/RL, and the Policy Director and his colleagues informed about developments and events in Hungary. The titles included here cover almost all aspects of Hungarian political, social, and cultural life. Occasionally, Western publications on Hungary and English translations of interesting Hungarian newspaper articles were also interfiled.

HU OSA 300-40-3 Subject Card Files, 1954-1992

The cards give a profound and thorough documentation on Hungarian state agencies, ministries, organizations, institutions, associations, plants, factories, agricultural cooperatives, and hospitals, as well as on their leadership, personnel, and productivity. The information on the cards was continuously updated by extracting data from Hungarian and Western press, Hungarian monitoring materials, Information Items, and biographical files.

HU OSA 300-40-4 Information Items, 1951-1972

The information reports, which were sent to the Munich headquarters from RFE’s ten Western European field bureaus, are based on interviews conducted with Hungarian immigrants and defectors in Western refugee camps and immigration offices or with Western travelers coming back from behind the Iron Curtain, and also RFE correspondence with anonymous sources from the socialist countries. Once they reached the Hungarian Unit, the reports were carefully checked for accuracy and plausibility. Only those reports which passed the various filtering systems were recommended as subjects for producing radio programs. The information items served as sources for the (in)famous Black Voice in the 50s, a program of the Hungarian Broadcasting Department which was aimed to become the "guilty conscience" of the nomenclature, local party leaders, directors of factories and of agricultural cooperatives, and to feature the oppressive regime on a personified, local level.

The transcripts of broadcasts of the main Hungarian radio stations cover the events of 1956 Revolution. When jamming allowed the monitoring of the broadcasts of independent, local radio stations was done as well. During those weeks a good number of so called free, but ephemeral radios began operating in Budapest and almost all major towns (Miskolc, Gyor, Debrecen, Szolnok, Kaposvár).

HU OSA 300-40-10 Press Survey, 1955-1994

Hungarian press was one of the most important sources of information for the Hungarian Unit. Prepared five times a week by the Research Analysts, the Press Survey was based on the regular review of over one hundred newspapers and periodicals, including more than two dozens of regional dailies, for which the Unit had been subscribed. Occasionally, specialized publications of direct interest to some of the editors or analysts had been also reviewed.

HU OSA 336-0-5 Collectionof Documents relating to Opposition and Emigration, 1957-1989

The fond consist of documents relating to Béla Király as one of the key figures of the Hungarian political émigré community in the US, who also took an active part in supporting and organising the Hungarian domestic dissident movement throughout the 1980s. The first part of the documents covers mostly the early post-1956 period, that saw the establishment of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation, and the Inquiry of the Special United Nations Committee on the 1956 Hungarian revolution. (In this period Prof. Király often filed his papers in dossiers called “Diary” in chronogical order.) The second part relates mostly to the 1980s, when the Hungarian dissident movements were revitalised and started to have more and more of an impact on the political life of the country. In the reports and correspondence the researcher can find documents that are connected to many important figures, who became prominent politicians after the collapse of the regime in 1989.

HU OSA 361 Personal Papers of Hegedus András. = Hegedus András irathagyatéka, 1940-1998

The series “Biographical data” makes up a relatively small part of the collection since most of András Hegedus’ biographical documents belong to the series “Personal files, documents”. The reasoning behind this is that Hegedus published most of his biographical materials in his memoirs. Also found in the latter series are the various manuscripts and other versions of his published memoirs. The series “Essays” is likewise relatively small, since most materials of this type are filed under the series “Sociological writings” or “Political writings”. Hegedus’ correspondence is divided into two series: “Letters Written by András Hegedus” and “Letters Written to András Hegedus”. The works, articles and essays that were written by others and preserved by Hegedus are divided into two separate series. Under the series “Writings by others” are filed those printouts and manuscripts in which the author was clearly identifiable and the writing was obviously the result of individual effort. In cases when a work was written by a team or under the aegis of a research institute, and/or the author was not clearly identifiable, documents were filed under the series “Manuscripts of Institutions”. The series “Workers’ Academy” contains documents related to the foundation and operation in the 1990s of this special, privately-run educational institution, which Hegedus treated as highly important in the last part of his life.

HU OSA 361-0-4 Personal files, documents. = Személyes dokumentumok, 1953-1991

Among them we separated out those of mainly private interest, such as documents relating to the upkeep of his flat and his weekend house in Fonyód (near Lake Balaton), files connected to the his wife's work, the financial affairs of the family, household expenses, family travels, and documents concerning his illness at the end of his life. One of the most interesting documents is the inventory of items he possessed when he returned to Budapest from Moscow in 1958. The Russian language identity card with which he was allowed to move around in Hungary in 1945 may be of special interest. Hegedus did not keep a regular diary, but his fragmentary notes from the critical days of 1956 provide an insight into the facts and events that he recorded from his own point of view.

HU OSA 361-0-5 Letters written by Andras Hegedus. = Másokhoz intézett levelek, 1956-1998

Hegedus did not preserve his correspondence in an organized way. He selected only a few of his letters to be kept separately. The archives followed this principle and treated only a small part of his correspondence as being important enough to be filed separately. Most of the letters of this series date from the most critical period of his life in Moscow, 1956-1958. This was the time when he wrote letters to Khruschev, Rákosi, Gero, to the Central Committee of newly established MSZMP and to the Soviet Communist Party. In addition, the protest letter against the 1968 Czechoslovak intervention that he addressed to the Politburo of MSZMP is of outstanding importance.

HU OSA 361-0-7 Political writings. = Politikai írások, 1946-1996

This series contains András Hegedus's writings and lectures at international conferences that deal with fundamental political questions. The subjects illustrate Hegedus`s views in different periods. The most important topics are: the problems of peace movements, bureaucracy (here it is worth noting that his book on "Bureaucracy and Socialism" was published in German as well as in Japanese - the introductions to these editions are also available here), the philosophical background of actual questions, the social and economic problems of the Carpathian Basin and the neighboring countries, Hungary in 1956, his speeches delivered at various fora of the MDP, his writings and memoirs on the problems and development of economic and political reforms. The most relevant texts in this series are the writings that were published either as separate articles or within collaborative research reports about the necessary political and economic reforms.

HU OSA 361-0-8 Writings by others = Mások írásai, 1946-1994

We did not create any internal sorting system by topic or by date within this series. The arrangement follows the alphabetic order of the authors and institutions. Many authors sent complimentary copies of their works to Hegedus, some because they had been his disciples or colleagues. In one way or another the whole elite of Hungarian social science is represented here, from Agócs to Zsille, from Elemér Hankiss to Ágnes Heller. There are other works that were not sent by the author but that Hegedus felt it important to acquire, especially when the publication itself was not yet legally available in Hungary, as in the case of "New Class" by Milovan Djilas, or Bill Lomax`s famous book on the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Péter Gosztonyi`s articles on 1956, which the author regularly sent to Hegedus, are also of considerable interest. Perhaps the most important item in this group is a typed and corrected manuscript of György Konrád and Iván Szelényi's "The Road of the Intellectuals to Class-Rule", which was first published in samizdat in the early 1980s. According to the authors' preface, only three copies of this manuscript were made and two of them were confiscated by the political police. Only one copy reached Western Europe, where the samizdat edition was most probably produced.

HU OSA 361-0-12 Manuscripts of Institutions. = Intézményektol származó kéziratok, 1956-1995

We placed in this series writings that might have fit better in the group of "Writings by others", but whose author was not identifiable, or when it was obvious that the publication was the result of collective team work or represents the viewpoint of an institution. The most important items in this group are the minutes and notes of the Petofi Circle from 1956, and the preparatory studies for the 1968 reforms of the economic mechanism.
