About Christian Socialism by Béla Somogyi, Népszava –Calendar, 1919. 65-70 pp. (…) …the social democracy fights for the human
rights, dignity, education and fair/decent bred of the working people –
in one word, for the earthly happiness. But for the same reason, those
who believe in afterlife and fear their own salvation should also support
social democracy. The sin, the dirt of the soul, which gets one to the
hell according to the believers, is mostly flourishing on the hideous dunghill
of the oppression, ignorance and misery. No the prayer, no the preaching,
no the different ceremonies, no the fear of devil and the wish for heaven
are the means of moral improvement but the prosperity makes many sins unnecessary,
the good health diminishes certain tendencies to commit sin, and the knowledge
the one which reinforces our power of judgement. These keep more efficiently
away the devil form us than the most sweet-smelling smoke of incense and
the most compassionate preaching. Those who are teaching them to stand
unjustness and to be humble, patient and obedient alienate the working
class from “God” (In fact that is what clericalists are doing.). Whereas,
those who are teaching them freedom, law, self-consciousness, wealth and
education bring nearer up the working class to “God” (That is what social
democrats are doing).

The name of the new party: triple deceit Look at the nameplate! (…) Well, are they following the example of
Jesus Christ? Do they have right to use the cover of the religion of Jesus
Christ? Can the poor people trust them if they call themselves “Christians”?
(…)
I have already showed the way they are following the example of Jesus Christ by using his name. How do we stand with the disciplines of the Gospel? Here are some of disciplines: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew V. 3-5.) Tell me, you proletarian brother, do the masters of the new party want to succeed in this way? Or:”… do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Are they acting in this way? The list of disciplines could be extended even more. It is obvious that the Church and its servants are not sharing common basis with the Christianity found by Jesus. They are even against of such disciplines. At the same time they want us, poor working people to be following what the Gospel teaches us: to be humble, patient and modest. We should not claim anything for us, just to wait for the afterlife happiness and for the sake of such compensation we should refuse to have those good things in life, which are abundantly distributed among them. Why do not they set a good example? (…)
