The so-called diplomats’ shop, officially KONSUMEX Department Store, was set up in Goldberger House in the early 1980s. In this shop one could pay only in hard currency (such as US Dollar or Deutsche Mark), which was a strategy to keep both legal and illegal, foreign-currency cash within the country. The most up-to-date informatics and card-paying systems were developed and operated by a team of young computer experts. József Huszágh and two of his ex-colleagues give an insight, not only in the nuts and bolts of the IT system but also in the life of the „dollar shop”, and the strict control which, as the story goes, could not prevent the theft of an expensive motorbike.
