Animation Night at OSA Archivum to commemorate the UN Human Rights Day

Award-winning works from different parts of the world prove that animation is a powerful medium to expose abuse and discrimination as well as portray human dignity and promote human rights.

Neighbors  (Norman McLaren, Canada, 1952, 8 min)
An Oscar-winner short animation tells the story of two men live peacefully side by side in houses made of cardboard, but when a flower blooms between both their houses, each one decides to take possession of it.

Slaves  (David Aronowitsch and Hanna Heilborn, Sweden, 2008, 15 min)
Abuk is nine, Machiek is fifteen. Like thousands of other children they were taken by government sponsored militia in Sudan and used as slaves. They were later liberated by the Committee for the Eradication of Abduction of Women and Children (CEAWC) in Sudan headed by James Aguer. Based on an interview made in 2003.

Tussilago (Jonas Odell, Sweden, 2010, 15 min)
In 1977 West German terrorist Norbert Kröcher was arrested for having planned to kidnap the Swedish politician Anna-Greta Leijon. Among the people arrested during the following raids was Kröcher’s former girlfriend ‘A.’ This is her story.

Orsolya (Bella Szederkényi, Hungary, 2009, 8 min)
One day, Orsolya discovers a sudden change in her body that turns her world upside down. All of a sudden she does not fit in anymore. But there is always hope for a happy ending.

The War Prayer  (Markos Kounalakis, USA, 2006, 14 min)
Based on Mark Twain’s piece “The War Prayer,” a short story written in the heat of the Philippine-American war of 1899-1902 offering a poignant reflection on the double-edged moral sword implicit to war.

Followed by discussion with Markos Kounalakis, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Media and Communication Studies at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary and President and Publisher Emeritus of the Washington Monthly.
