WHAT IS OLD

New Yorkers and Chicagoans have very different definitions of what constitutes an "old" building. To a New Yorker, "old" can mean a building like the Conference House dating from 1680-88, or other structures dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As residents of a much newer city, Chicagoans consider their handful of buildings dating from the 1830's 40's and 50's to be "old". Even these are extremely rare in Chicago due to the effects of the Great Chicago Fire that destroyed much of the central city in 1871.
