This modest building
is one of the few surviving early farmhouses located within the Chicago
city limits. It was built as the residence of John Wingert, one of a number
of immigrants who, in seeking refuge from religious persecution in Germany,
created a settlement called Canfield on the prairie frontier. The building
has been added onto several times, including the distinctive two-story,
Italianate-style section.
