The image of Christ also became a symbol.  The revolting peasants carried the crucifix into battle while Grunewald’s  “The Altar of Isenheim” depicted the Savior, the tormented, crucified Christ who symbolized the true Gospel and the promise of salvation. “The crucified and tortured Christ became the embodiment of the people’s struggle against the violation of God-ordered equality”.
