Back to Introduction

In this part of the exhibition, you may see and hear photos, archive and sound documents illustrating the days of mourning and the funeral from all over the world. The closing part is the funeral, 9 March 1953. At the moment of depositing Stalin's body near Lenin's one in the mausoleum - 12 am in Moscow time -- millions stood still in silence all over the Communist bloc, from China to Central and Eastern Europe, and also in some Western capitals upon the call of the local Communist Party. In the countries of the Soviet bloc only the sounds of horns of ships, engines and factories howled.
