The Research Institute of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty maintained files on various issues related to the political changes in Czechoslovakia in 1968 as well as files on the political and military response of the Soviet Union and other members of the Warsaw Pact. The materials generally cover the chronology of events, relationships between the parties directly involved in the crisis as well as reactions from other communist and non-communist countries. The records also give insight into the decision making and political roles of some of the most prominent figures of the 1968 Prague events.

This part of the holdings also contains several files on the 1968 Prague events. They mainly cover the Moscow demonstrations against the invasion on August 22, 1968 and some original and copied letters written in support of Czechoslovakia.

This series contains three issues of the Chronicle of Current Events dedicated to the invasion of the CSSR, as well as Andrei Sakharov's supportive essay "Thoughts on Progress, Peaceful Coexistence and Intellectual Freedom”.

 

Library materials

 

The microfiche collection of the OSA Library covers a period ranging from early 1967 to late 1969. It includes communist party dailies, military periodicals, cultural publications, regional press, and satirical magazines. The collection illustrates the climate in which pressure for reform developed, and the beginning of the infamous normalization period, which followed the invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.
